Poeta, satírico, compositor y cantante irlandés. Se graduó en el Trinity College y estudió derecho en Londres, donde se convirtió en cercano amigo de Lord Byron y Percy Bysshe Shelley. Sus colecciones Irish Melodies y National Airs (1807–34) se componen de 130 poemas originales adaptados a melodías folclóricas, entre ellos "The Minstrel Boy, "Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms y "The Last Rose of Summer. Estas canciones, interpretadas por Moore ante la aristocracia londinense, despertaron simpatía y apoyo para los nacionalistas irlandeses. Su reputación entre sus contemporáneos rivalizaba con las de Byron y de Walter Scott. Su poema Lalla Rookh (1817), una fantasía oriental romántica, se convirtió en el poema más traducido de su tiempo. En 1824, Byron le confió sus memorias, pero las quemó, presumiblemente para proteger a este. Más tarde publicó las biografías de Byron y de otros personajes, así como una Historia de Irlanda (1827).
